How AI interviews work

From application to shortlist recommendation

Two independent formats, a structured phone screen and a live technical video interview, each ending in a transcript, a scorecard, and evidence your team reviews. QuillHire never makes the final call.

15 minutes, phone

AI Phone Screener

  1. 1

    Candidate applies

Upload a list, connect your careers page, or push candidates from your job board flow. No candidate-side setup.

  2. 2

    QuillHire calls within minutes

An outbound call goes to the candidate’s mobile number while your role is still top of mind for them, the window where reply rates are highest.

  3. 3

    A structured 15-minute conversation

The AI works through your rubric: must-have skills, current and expected compensation, notice period, location and shift fit, and why they applied. It follows up on vague answers instead of accepting them.

  4. 4

    Evidence lands in your dashboard

Full transcript, per-criterion scores, and a clear advance-or-reject recommendation, ready before a recruiter has opened their inbox.

45 minutes, video, anti-cheat

AI Technical Video Interview

  1. 1

Pick the role, and the round configures itself

Developer roles get the live coding module. Everything else runs as a technical conversation. You can override the choice during setup if you want coding for a non-developer role, or a discussion-only round for an engineer.

  2. 2

    A standard video call invite

The candidate receives an ordinary video call link and joins from a browser. Nothing to download, no account to register, no proprietary interview portal to learn.

  3. 3

    One structured 45-minute session

The AI works through role-specific questions and probes the answers: how a PM would sequence a roadmap under a hard constraint, how an analyst would debug a metric that moved the wrong way, or, on a coding round, why a candidate chose one data structure over another and what breaks at scale.

  4. 4

Anti-cheat runs for the whole session

Monitoring covers a second person in frame, additional voices, another device or restricted application on screen, and answers that read as recited. On a coding round it also checks whether the submitted code matches the assigned problem and whether timing looks like someone actually working it out.

  5. 5

A reviewable scorecard, not a verdict

You receive the transcript, any code that was written, per-competency scores, and anti-cheat findings as timestamped evidence, for your team to judge and never as an automated pass/fail.

Frequently asked

General

What exactly is QuillHire?

QuillHire runs AI interviews in two formats: a 15-minute phone screen, and a 45-minute live technical video interview with anti-cheat. Each one returns a transcript, a scorecard, and a clear recommendation.

Do I have to use both formats?

No. They are independent products, not stages of one funnel. Many teams run only the 15-minute phone screen for high-volume roles. Others skip the phone entirely and go straight to the 45-minute video interview.

Is the video interview different for developers?

It is the same 45-minute format either way. For a developer role it includes a live coding round, chosen during setup or picked automatically from the role. For every other role the same session is a technical interview with no coding in it. Same length, same price, same anti-cheat coverage.

Does QuillHire replace recruiters?

No. It takes the repetitive first-round interview work off your plate. You keep control of the questions, the criteria, and every hiring decision.

Why a standard video call instead of a proprietary interview portal?

Because every extra step between a candidate and the interview costs you candidates. QuillHire runs on an ordinary video call link that opens in a browser, with nothing to download, no account to create, no unfamiliar interview product to learn five minutes before a high-stakes conversation.

How do I get started?

Sign up with your work email, add a job, upload candidates, and dispatch an interview. Most teams complete their first one the same day. Start free, no card required.

The process

How fast can QuillHire call after an application?

As soon as a candidate is in QuillHire (via upload, your careers page, or a job board flow), the AI can place a 15-minute outbound phone screen within seconds.

What evidence do we get after each format?

Both produce a transcript, structured scores, and a clear recommendation. The video interview additionally returns any anti-cheat findings as timestamped evidence, plus any code the candidate wrote.

Do the two formats have to run in order?

No. They are independent products. Pick what the role needs: a 15-minute phone screen for volume, a 45-minute video interview for depth, or both.

Who is QuillHire built for?

Hiring teams at startups, staffing agencies, IT services firms, and campus recruiters who run interviews at volume. QuillHire operates in both the United States and India.

Phone screening

What is AI phone screening?

AI phone screening is an automated live phone call that asks structured hiring questions the moment a candidate applies. QuillHire dials the candidate, captures the answers, and scores fit before a human recruiter spends any time.

How long is a QuillHire phone screen?

15 minutes. That is enough to cover must-have skills, notice period, current and expected salary, location and shift fit, and motivation, while still respecting the candidate’s time. The call is hard-limited to that length, so it cannot overrun.

Do candidates need an app or internet connection?

No. It is an ordinary phone call to their mobile number. No app, no login, no data connection, which matters for candidates on patchy networks or entry-level phones.

Can we customise questions per role?

Yes. Each job can define mandatory skills, a salary band, notice-period limits, and custom screening questions, so every call matches the role it is hiring for.

Does the phone screen include anti-cheat?

No, and it does not need to. Anti-cheat monitoring applies to the video interview, where there is a screen and a camera to monitor. The phone screen is a conversation about availability, expectations, and background.

What happens after a strong phone screen?

That is your call. You can hire straight from it for high-volume roles, or move the candidate to the 45-minute video interview. The two formats are independent, so there is no required order.

Video interview

How does the 45-minute AI video interview work?

QuillHire schedules or joins a video call and runs a structured 45-minute interview against the competencies the role actually needs. Anti-cheat monitoring runs throughout. You receive a transcript, a scorecard, any code that was written, and any flagged evidence afterwards.

Is this a live interview or a one-way recording?

Live. Most tools sold as AI video interviewing are asynchronous: the candidate records answers alone and uploads them. QuillHire runs a real two-way conversation where the next question depends on what the candidate just said, which is where most of the signal comes from.

When does the interview include a coding round?

On developer roles. The coding module is selected during setup, or the platform selects it from the role you picked. You can override it either way: a coding round for a data analyst who will write SQL daily, or a discussion-only round for a staff engineer you want assessed on architecture rather than syntax.

Is this only for engineering roles?

No. Without the coding module, the 45-minute interview suits any role where judgement needs assessing rather than code. Product managers, marketing and growth analysts, business and data analysts, operations, finance, HR, and customer success candidates all take this format.

What does "technical" mean for a non-engineering role?

It means depth in the craft of that role. A product manager is asked how they would sequence a roadmap under a hard constraint. A marketing analyst is asked how they would debug a metric that moved the wrong way. The AI probes the reasoning rather than accepting the first answer.

Do candidates need a special app?

No. Candidates join from a standard video call link in their browser. There is nothing to install and no account to create.

How does QuillHire detect cheating?

It watches the full session for a second person in frame, additional voices in the room, another device or restricted application visible on screen, answers that pattern-match to being read from off-screen, and response timing inconsistent with genuine recall. On a coding round it also checks whether the submitted code matches the assigned problem. Findings are surfaced as timestamped evidence for your team to review, never as an automated pass/fail verdict.

Can it tell if a candidate is using an AI assistant?

It looks directly for that pattern: whether the submitted code actually matches the assigned problem, whether response timing is consistent with someone genuinely working it out, and whether a complete solution appears with no visible development path. These are surfaced as timestamped evidence, not as an accusation.

What if a strong candidate just works quickly and gets flagged?

Nothing is auto-rejected, which is precisely why. Fast, clean work looks different from pasted work, and both land in front of a human with the full session captured. The system flags for review and your team decides.

Can it catch every way a candidate could cheat?

No detection system can promise that, and we would rather say so than oversell. QuillHire is built to surface concrete, reviewable evidence, not to claim a certainty it does not have.

Can we use our own coding problems?

Yes. Problems can be calibrated to your stack and seniority band so the round reflects the work the candidate would actually do.

Can humans still take over?

Yes. Use the AI for the first round, then bring in your hiring manager once the evidence looks strong.

Pricing

How does QuillHire pricing work?

You pay per completed interview rather than per seat or per subscription. One price covers the whole session, whichever format you run.

Are there extra charges if an interview runs long?

No. Interviews are hard-limited to their length, so a session cannot overrun and there is no per-minute surcharge to reconcile afterwards. The price you see is the price for that interview.

Does the coding round cost extra?

No. The coding module is part of the 45-minute video interview, not an add-on. A technical round and a coding round cost the same, because they are the same product configured differently.

Which currency will I be billed in?

Customers in India are billed in ₹. Everywhere else is billed in US dollars. The two pricing pages show the exact figures for each, and the rupee prices are set for the Indian market rather than converted from the dollar prices.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. You can sign up with a work email and run your first interview without entering a card.

Do I need to talk to sales?

No. Pricing is published, signup is self-serve, and there is no minimum commitment or annual contract required to start.

Security and data

How is candidate data handled?

Candidate contact details, transcripts, and scorecards are used only to run interviews for your hiring workflows. Access is limited to members of your workspace.

Can we delete candidate data?

Yes. Workspace admins can remove candidates and their associated interview artifacts whenever your retention policy requires it.

How is anti-cheat evidence stored?

Anti-cheat findings live alongside the interview record in your workspace, timestamped against the session so a reviewer can see the moment a signal fired. They are reviewable evidence for your team, not an automated verdict.

Where should product dashboards be indexed?

They should not. Marketing pages on quillhire.com are indexable; the app at app.quillhire.com (dashboards, candidates, billing) should remain noindex.
